Calling all chocolate loving adults! If you’ve never sipped on a mudslide before, you’re seriously missing out. You can enjoy it in two ways – either on the rocks or blended to frozen perfection. As a cocktail on the rocks, each sip of this creamy cocktail is smooth and goes down easily. As a frozen beverage, it’s just like enjoying a milkshake… but for adults only!

I learned how to make this fabulous, over-the-top cocktail back in my bartender days and it’s been a huge hit among my friends ever since. A tall, chocolate drizzled glass filled with a decadent combination of Bailey’s, Kahlua, vodka, and vanilla ice cream blended together to a smooth milkshake. To send it over the edge, add a nice dollop of whipped cream on top and even more chocolate drizzle.

Sipping a mudslide on the rocks is also quite satisfying. All you need is a cocktail shaker and a highball glass in order to serve this sweet and sophisticated after-dinner drink! You simply need to shake, strain, and enjoy every smooth sip of this chocolate cocktail. It’s great for dinner parties and all other adults-only occasions.

Ingredient Notes

labeled ingredients to make a mudslide on the rocks.

Irish Cream – This a creamy liqueur that combines Irish whiskey, cream, chocolate, and sugar. Remember to store opened bottle in the refrigerator and it can lasts up to a year! Bailey’s works very well, but you can really aim to impress with your own homemade Irish Cream.

Kahlua – This rich coffee liqueur is very popular in many classic cocktail recipes, but it’s also tasty straight over ice. Store open bottles in a cool, dark place.

Vodka –  For this cocktail, I like to use espresso vodka to enhance the coffee flavor of Kahlua. You can also use classic vodka without flavors if espresso vodka is not available. Store vodka in the freezer or in a cool, dark place.

Milk: you can use full fat, low fat, or fat free milk, per personal preference.

PRO TIP: Remember that your cocktail will be as good as the ingredients you put into it!

How to Make a Frozen Mudslide

Blend it – Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and pulse until smooth.

Drizzle the glass – To drizzle the inside of the glass with chocolate, hold it in your non-dominant hand and hold a bottle of chocolate syrup in the other. Tilt the glass at about 45° angle and start pouring chocolate on the side of the glass. Turn the glass as you pour the syrup in a swirl all around the glass.

Serve – Pour the frozen cocktail into the prepared glass. Garnish with whipped cream and some more chocolate syrup on top.

PRO TIP: You will need a strong blender that can easily blend ice. There’s nothing worse than ice chunks in a milkshake!

Recipe FAQs

Can I make a gluten-free mudslide?

Yes! Bailey’s now makes a gluten-free and lactose-free Irish cream.

Kahlua is another factor that could effect a person with gluten allergy or Celiac disease. Officially, Kahlua has not released exact ingredients in their coffee liqueur, but they do state that it should be safe to drink for people who stay gluten-free. If you would like to avoid Kahlua, there are other coffee liqueurs that are specifically labeled gluten-free. Substitute one of those liqueurs instead of Kahlua.

For vodka, Three Olives states that their vodka is gluten-free, including their flavored vodkas like the espresso vodka. If you wish, you can substitute Tito’s or another gluten-free vodka that is not made from grain.

Can a mudslide be lactose-free?

Yes! You can make this creamy cocktail lactose-free.

For a frozen mudslide: Use Bailey’s Almande, which is gluten-free and lactose-free, or make your own Irish Cream. Use lactose-free vanilla ice cream. I like Breyers brand of lactose-free ice cream – I truly can’t even taste the difference.

For a mudslide on the rocks: use Bailey’s Almande and lactose-free milk. I recommend Fairlife lactose-free milk because it does not have any additional sweetness to it.

How strong is a mudslide?

Don’t be fooled by the sweetness in this dessert cocktail! With 2 oz of Irish cream, 2 oz of Kahlua, and 2 oz of espresso vodka, this chocolate cocktail really packs a punch. Drink responsibly!

If I dont have baileys can I substitute it with Rumchata ?

    1. You can but the flavor will be different. Rumchata is a rum with cinnamon flavoring and Bailey’s is whiskey with a hint of chocolate and coffee so it would taste a lot different.
