Eggnog French Toast is the perfect holiday breakfast and brunch recipe! Classic homemade French toast is all dressed up with flavorful, festive eggnog, nutmeg, cinnamon, and rum extract.
It’s my husband’s favorite time of the year when I bring home eggnog. He lights up in anticipation of cocktails, cookies, and breakfast treats that I make using eggnog. Eggnog Pancakes is his favorite holiday breakfast, but I prefer this eggnog French toast recipe!
First of all, I’m a huge sucker for French toast – especially if it’s made with Brioche bread! Brioche bread tastes the best and when combined with eggnog and spices, the flavors are so complimentary of each other. Brioche is soft and fluffy, and it does the best job soaking the sweet egg mixture. Brioche also has a sweet and buttery flavor, which contributes to the overall and texture.
There is a good amount of eggnog that goes into this recipe but the eggnog itself has a mild flavor. The sauce that I serve with the Eggnog Pancakes would be a good way to add more eggnog flavor, but maple syrup would be a nice compliment as well.
How to Make Eggnog French Toast
PRO TIP: Brioche and eggnog already have sugar added so both ingredients are sweetened. It can be a personal preference to add more sugar to the egg mixture or not. Remember, if you will be using maple syrup, that will add more sweetness to the dish as well.
Make the egg mixture. Simply whisk the egg mixture ingredients together in a shallow bowl and set aside (1).
Dip the bread. Dip each slice of brioche into the egg mixture on both sides (2, 3).
Heat the pan. Heat your large pan over medium-low heat. If it’s too hot, the outside of the bread will burn and not cook all the way through.
Cook the French toast. Cook each piece of toast for about 3-4 minutes per side (4, 5).
PRO TIP: Preheat the oven to 250°F and keep cooked eggnog French toast in there while you continue cooking the rest of it. It’ll stay nice and warm that way!
Tips for the Best Eggnog French Toast
- To enhance all the flavors of eggnog and the aroma, add some pure vanilla extract and rum extract to the egg mixture.
- Preheat the pan completely before you start to batter the bread.
- Don’t turn the heat up higher than medium. I would actually recommend the heat to be a little lower than medium because the outside of the bread cooks very fast and you want the inside to be cooked through as well.
- Don’t walk away too far, French toast only takes 3-4 minutes of cooking on each side. Use a large pan so you can fit several slices at a time.
- If using the griddle, preheat it well and make sure the heat is spread evenly. The downfall of a griddle is often uneven heat.

Eggnog French Toast Recipe
Ingredients
- 14 oz Brioche loaf
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup eggnog
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp rum extract
- pinch salt
- 2 tbsp brown sugar* optional
Instructions
- Slice the loaf into thick slices that are between 1/2 and 3/4 inch thick.
- Whisk everything together for the egg mixture until it’s smooth and set it aside.
- Preheat a large cooking pan over medium heat and lower the heat to medium-low so the outside of the bread doesn’t cook faster than the inside. Grease the pan with a little oil.
- Dip each side of the bread into the egg mixture and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side. Depending on the size of the pan, you may need to cook it in batches of 3 or 4 slices at a time.
- To keep cooked French Toast warm, preheat the oven to 250° and keep it in the oven while the rest is cooking.
Notes
- *Adjust sweetness: Brioche and eggnog already have sugar added so both ingredients are sweetened. It can be a personal preference to add more sugar to the egg mixture or not.
- Lactose free and dairy free: There are several dairy free and lactose free options on the market. There are almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, and simply dairy free holiday nog options.
- Brioche bread is the best for French toast! It’s so soft and fluffy and it does the very best job at soaking up the egg mixture. Brioche also has a sweet and buttery flavor, which greatly compliments the eggnog flavor. French Baguette is the second best option. Coming in third is challah, which also works well, but is denser and drier than the other options.
