Let me tell you about this Philly Cheese Steak Calzone….

There are just no words, you have to try it! While you are eating this deliciousness, you will understand why I can’t find words to describe it. Just yummy noise…yummy, yummy noise!

This calzone has been on my menu for about a month now! Something just kept coming up and it was getting pushed down lower and lower. This week, I couldn’t stop thinking about it and I made it for lunch. Finally! I satisfied my craving and it was go-oood!

I want to give you a little tip before I let you get to the recipe. You know the point of a Philly Cheese Steak is for the steak to be sliced very thin. Have you tried slicing a raw steak thin? No matter how sharp your knife is, it will be a big pain in a rump! So here is a little tip: freeze it first for about an hour! When the steak is partially frozen, it will be a breeze to slice and thaw very fast after being cut thin.

I know many of you will also notice that I used sharp white cheddar cheese instead of Provolone. How could I?! Well, I like a lot of flavor and sharp white cheddar is very flavorful. I’m actually not a huge fan of Provolone because I find it a little bland. But, if you want to stay true to the sandwich, feel free to use Provolone!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb deli ready pizza dough
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp cornmeal
  • 1/2 lb lean steak sirloin or rib-eye, thinly sliced
  • 1 small red bell pepper
  • 1/2 small yellow onion
  • salt
  • fresh ground pepper
  • 2 oz shredded Sharp White Cheddar cheese or Provolone if you prefer
  • Olive oil for brushing

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400. If using pizza stone, place it in the oven while it's cold and heat it up at the same time.
  • Make sure to freeze your steak for about an hour before cutting. (Freezing it will help cutting it thinly.)
  • Slice partially frozen steak as thin as possible. Slice green pepper and onion thinly as well and set aside.
  • Preheat some oil (about a tablespoon or two) in a medium frying pan, over medium heat and sauté steak, peppers, and onions with some salt and pepper until steak is no longer pink. Strain the juice and set the mixture aside.
  • Divide pizza dough in two halves. Roll out the dough but not too thin or it will rip.
  • Spread some cheese in the center of calzones and divide Philly Steak mixture among them.
  • Add remaining cheese on top and bring the edges of pizza dough together. Press the edges, sealing them well. You can also braid the edges or fold them in to secure the filling.
  • Be careful and use oven mitts! Sprinkle the hot pizza stone with cornmeal and place calzones on top. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Once baked, brush calzones with some olive oil.
