Bacon Wrapped BBQ Hot Dogs make an amazing addition to any summer barbecue party. These hot dogs are tossed in BBQ sauce, wrapped in bacon, and grilled to smoky perfection. To make it even better, they are topped with crispy fried onions.
HOT DOG RECIPE
One of the best and easiest things to grill in the summer are hot dogs, and nothing can make it more exciting than bacon. Bacon really does make everything better.
Whatever party you are planning in the summer, throw some hot dogs on the grill and your guests will be happy. Kids are easy to satisfy, just give them hot dogs, buns, and ketchup. But adults may want a little more than just ketchup. That’s where these bacon wrapped beauties come in.
This recipe is delicious and it is easy. The best part is that you can wrap the hot dogs in bacon ahead of time and keep it in the fridge until ready to grill.
When it’s time for the party, choose any BBQ sauce, whether it is mustard based, spicy, or honey sweet. All of these types will go great with bacon and hot dogs. I like to have a variety of BBQ sauce and cheeses on the side too. It’s very easy to create a spread of sauces and additional toppings to give your guests some options. Great cheeses to include are Monterrey Jack, white cheddar, pepper jack, and smoked cheddar.
Of course, you can’t forget the crispy fried onions. Crispy texture and subtle onion flavor is the perfect way to top off these hot dogs.
HOW TO MAKE BACON WRAPPED HOT DOGS
Toss all the hot dogs in BBQ sauce and wrap each one in uncooked bacon. Wrap one slice of bacon around each hot dog, tucking in the ends of bacon so it doesn’t come apart.
You will want to set the grill grate furthest away from the coals so the bacon doesn’t crisp too fast. Spray wrapped hot dogs with some cooking spray and grill them, turning each one a quarter of the way once that side is crispy.
A few minutes before the meat is done, place the buns on the grill to warm up.
HOW TO MAKE CRISPY FRIED ONIONS
Slice the whole onion widthwise, to create thin circle slices. Place onion rings into a large bowl and pour buttermilk over it. Make sure onions are submerged. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. (You can keep onions in buttermilk for a few hours if needed.)
Pour oil into a deep, large cooking pa and preheat it to 375° (or use a fryer). Cover a wire rack with a couple of sheets of paper towels.
Mix four, salt, and pepper in a large shallow bowl. Take sliced onions out of buttermilk and gently shake it off. Toss onions in the flour mixture until evenly coated. Fry onion straws in hot oil until golden brown. Take out and spread them out on a paper towel to soak up excess oil.

I haven’t tried your recipe on topping a hot dog with homemade onion rings but I was going to top it off with a can of French fried onions rings that I got from Kroger you know, like that green bean casserole every thanksgiving made with French’s crispy onions in a can, but instead I topped the hot dog with a scoop of potato salad (southern style) and it turned out great,it had a little crunch from the potato salad that I brought from Kroger,it made the hot dog a little bit filling and satisfying, because your side of potato salad was in your hot dog buns,so one bite and you’re done.
